Title: Beta-Adrenoceptor Blocking Drugs As Antihypertensive Agents
Abstract: Following Ahlquist's definition, in 1948, of alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors[l], it took ten years until the first beta-adrenoceptor blocking agent, di-chloroisoprenaline was shown to exert a pharmacological effect [2]. Clinically useful beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs such as pronethalol and propanolol were introduced in the early 1960s and the first report of the antihypertensive effect caused by beta-adrenoceptor blockade was published by Prichard in 1964 [3].
