Abstract: Chapters 1 and 2 gave us a brief outline of the philosophical and cultural foundations of Chinese leadership. The aim of this chapter is to provide an introduction to some of the core features of Chinese society. These are, of course, developed from the traditions we have been looking at, but have since entered Chinese life to such an extent that they lie at the heart of the thoughts, emotions, beliefs, values, judgments and actions of all Chinese people, even if they have never read a word that Confucius or Lao Zi ever wrote.
