Title: The use of leaf removal for premium sparkling wine production in Tasmania
Abstract: Tasmania’s reputation for premium sparkling wine production is gaining strength. Despite this, some growers are yet to prescribe management techniques specific to sparkling production and frequently manage the fruit in the same way as table wine fruit in the early part of the season. Leaf removal is a technique used extensively for table wine production to enhance the light environment around the bunches. Some growers use leaf removal when growing fruit for sparkling wine, despite its expense, without testing its effectiveness. This presentation discusses results from two years of study, comparing different timings of leaf removal, plus a non leaf-plucked control and the impact on yield, fruit quality and resulting wine quality of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
