Title: Genetic Variability and Correlation Studies in Egg-Plant (Solanum Melongena L.)
Abstract: Genetic variability and correlation studies were made in six quantitative characters in a collection of forty varieties of egg-plant, at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The genetic coefficients of variation in case of the number of fruits per plant and the number of borer infected fruits per plant were higher than other characters. Heritability estimates were high for all the characters. The expected genetic advance values for the total yield per plant, the number of fruits per plant and the number of borer infected fruits per plant were high, indicating a wide scope of improvement in these characters. A positive correlation was observed between the total yield per plant and the number of fruits per plant and the number of borer infected fruits per plant and the plant height; between the number of days taken to first fruit and the plant height. There was a negative correlation between the yield per plant and the number of days taken to first flower and the number of days taken to first fruit.
