Title: Plant Genetic Resources: A Conservation Imperative
Abstract: The ability of plants to continue to feed, clothe, house, heat and heal mankind is contingent on maintaining the genetic diversity of the vast-but shrinking-number of plant species in existence today. The genetic erosion of both wild and cultivated plants is alarming, and there is a special need to husband the genetic resources of the relatively few major crop species. This volume reviews the history of crop-plant development, introduction, and conservation in North America, outlines some effective policies and strategies for dynamic genetic conservation in plants, particularly those of direct economic value, and examines a variety of problems in and opportunities for preservation and utilization of the irreplaceable genetic heritage in agriculture and forestry.
