Title: Productivity, Nutrient Availability and their Uptake in Sorghum-Wheat Sequence under Long-Term Fertilization in Vertisol
Abstract: A field experiment for monitoring long-term changes in soil fertility and crop yields under sorghum-wheat cropping sequence is being carried out at Akola since 1988 (kharif. The present study was carried out on this experiment during 1999–2000 i.e after eleven complete cycles. The results revealed that for better yields balanced amount of NPK must be applied to both the crops as N alone or NP reduced yields. Lower doses of nutrients decreased the yields as well as nutrient uptake by both the crops. No beneficial effect of zinc application was noted on yield of wheat but resulted in increase of sorghum yield by 8.54 q ha −1 with the application of 20 kg ZnSO 4 ha −1 than no zinc. Application of Soiree fertilizers had a declining effect on productivity (9.3% decline), nutrient availability in soil as well as their uptake by both the crops. Total productivity (sorghum + wheat grain yield) of the sequence, nutrient availability in soil and their uptake by both the crops was maximum under 100% NPK + 10t FYM ha −1 application.
