Title: The Relation Between Phonetics and Phonology
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to give an appropriate account of the relation between phonetics and phonology. The historical point of views on phonetics and phonology mentioned by Ohala(1997) and Laver(1994)`s general levels in speech production theory help us to prove that phonetics and phonology are inseparable areas in linguistics. Even though it is true that the emphasis is different, the domains of phonetics and phonology overlap considerably as Anderson(1981) suggested a Venn diagram about their relationship. Here I point out that we should not ignore the relation between the two linguistic domains and that there may be better ground for phonetics and phonology when we accept its importance.
