Such changes have, in turn, come about largely owing to demographic changes at the individual level, such as the steady increase in life expectancy for both men and women, and at the population level, such as the steady increase in the proportion of the population aged 65 and over. For example, between 1984 and 2009, the proportion of the British population aged 65 and over increased from 15 to 16%, an increase which was equivalent to 1.7 million more people.
