Title: Sources and Effects of Major Pollutants in Sydney Stormwater
Abstract: Within the highly urbanised catchments of Sydney, there are two primary sources of pollutants, urban runoff and sewer overflows. A comprehensive monitoring programme of both the sewer and stomwater system has allowed estimates to be made of the contribution each makes to nutrient and bacterial contamination of the waterways. A case study of the Upper Parramatta River Catchment was chosen to examine the contribution from both sources to the total pollutant load. It was found that urban runoff contributed 57 per cent of total nitrogen load, 34 per cent of total phosphorus load and only 5 per cent of faecal coliform load. These pollutants are transported into the upper estuary of the Parramatta River where they persist due to limited tidal exchange. It is clear that effective strategies to deal with urban runoff and sewer overflows are needed if significant improvement to the waterway is to occur.
