Title: Living Organisms Vital in Testing for Toxicity
Abstract: This article discusses Part 8000, Toxicity, of the 19th Edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. It deals with plant and animal life and how they provide information on water quality. The advantage of toxicity testing is that, rather than test for a variety of chemicals in a water sample, the reaction of selected aquatic life is used to make a judgment on whether the water is safe. Topics covered include: use of various species; whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing; supplementary sections added to 19th edition; and, bacterial bioluminescence test.
