Title: ALLEVIATORY EFFECT OF GA3 ON THE EFFECTS OF SALINITY .AT SEEDLING STAGE IN WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUMj
Abstract: The present study consisted of evaluation of 9 genotypes of aestivum and 1 genotype of durum wheat in cixteen treatment combinations created from three salinity levels created by adding NaCl to the Hoagland's solution corresponding to EC values of 2.8, 13.5, 21.0 and 29.0 dSm −1 and four GA 1 levels of 0, 5, 10 and 15 ppm. The treatments were given to seed sown in Petridishes maintained at 25%: in an environmental chamber. On the 11 th day observations on various seedling characters were noted. The pooled analysis of variance indicated significant differences among the treatments. All the interactions were found to be significant indicating presence of non-linear response of the genotypes to different treatment combinations. The mean values showed reduction along the salinity gradient in all the characters excepting the sodium content where an increase was noted. The mean values increased with GA 3 over control, the highest being at 5 ppm. The trend in the tolerant and susceptible groups was the same. Application of GA 3 has reduced the severity of the effects of salinity. The amelioration was better at 5ppm.
