Title: Tratamiento del trauma mandibular: comparación de dos protocolos
Abstract: Objetivos: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el tratamiento de fracturas mandibulares tratadas en dos centros europeos durante 10 anos.
Diseno del estudio: Este estudio se basa en 2 bases de datos sistematicas informatizadas que han registrado continuamente
pacientes hospitalizados con fracturas maxilofaciales en dos centros, en Turin, Italia, y en Amsterdam, Holanda, durante
diez anos. Solo se consideraron para este estudio pacientes con fracturas mandibulares.
Resultados: Entre 2001 y 2010, un total de 752 pacientes fueron ingresados en el hospital de Turin con un total de 1.167 fracturas
mandibulares no asociadas con otras fracturas maxilofaciales, mientras que 245 pacientes fueron ingresados en el hospital de
Amsterdam con un total de 434 fracturas mandibulares. En el centro de Amsterdam, se utilizaron un total de 457 placas (1.5 – 2.7
mm) para las 434 lineas de fractura mandibular, mientras que en el centro de Turin se utilizaron 1232 placas (de 1.5 - 2.5 mm)
para el manejo de 1.167 lineas de fractura mandibular. En el centro de Turin, 190 pacientes fueron tratados principalmente con
IMF, mientras que 35 fueron los pacientes tratados con esa opcion terapeutica en el centro de Amsterdam.
Conclusiones: Los protocolos actuales para el tratamiento de las fracturas mandibulares son bastante eficientes. Es dificil establecer un protocolo uniforme, debido a las diferencias de cada fractura y a las experiencias y preferencias de los
cirujanos. Son todavia diversas las tecnicas que pueden utilizarse para cada tipo de fractura mandibular
