Abstract: Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) technology has progressed steadily with improving performance and success in precommercialization applications. Modeling and simulation of the fuel cell performance have an important role in fuel cell technology development. This article reviews MCFC and stack modeling activities over a half-century of MCFC development. Besides the electrochemical mechanisms, this article also presents cell and stack modeling approaches for the MCFC with the internal reforming process. The model developed uses a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics tool to study the precommercialized MCFC stack with complete physical and chemical descriptions in the model. The model has been validated against a full-scale fuel cell stack and applied to the fuel cell stack design and development.
