Title: CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION OF ZIRCONIUM AND HAFNIUM
Abstract: Hafnium and zirconium separation by ion exchange and desorption by 0.025M acetic acid and 1M perchloric or nitric acid is described. The influence of the mineral acid on the V/sub max/ position and separation efficiency is analyzed. The influence is related to an imposed second process, complex formation with the mineral acids. The strength of zirconium and hafnium complexes with mineral acids diminished according to the sequence: H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/)) HCI) HNO/sub 3/. It was also found that with increased ion exchange load the V/sub max/ increased and the ratio V/sub max/ Hf/V/sub m/axZr diminish ed. It is postulated that the latter is related to the appearance of poly-zirconium compounds and to the effects of large quantities of zirconium on the chemical behavior of hafnium. (R.V.J.)
