Title: RAPID METHOD FOR ESTIMATING MAXIMUM BENDING STRESS IN SIMPLE-SPAN HIGHWAY BRIDGES
Abstract: THIS PAPER PRESENTS A NEW AND RAPID METHOD FOR ESTIMATING MAXIMUM CONBINED BENDING STRESSES IN SIMPLE-SPAN BEAM BRIDGES PRODUCED BY DEAD LOAD, LIVE LOAD AND IMPACT. THE MAXIMUM LIVE LOAD AND IMPACT STRESSES ARE THOSE RESULTING FROM ANY HEAVY VEHICLE TYPE OR LOADING FOUND ON THE HIGHWAY. THE PROCEDURE FOR ESTIMATING THE TOTAL MAXIMUM STRESS IN SIMPLE-SPAN BRIDGES- OF GIVEN CONSTRUCTION TYPE AND DESIGN DESIGNATION-IS ACCOMPLISHED IN TWO SIMPLE STEPS: (1) CONVERT ANY PARTICULAR VEHICLE UNDER CONSIDERATION INTO ITS EQUIVALENT H TRUCK LOADING ON ANY SPAN, AS MAY BE DESIRED, BY USE OF THE CONVERSION COEFFICIENTS, AND (2) ONCE THE H- EQUIVALENCY OF A GIVEN VEHICLE HAS BEEN DETERMINED FOR A GIVEN SPAN THEN ITS STRESS-PRODUCING EFFECTS MAY BE DETERMINED FROM CHARTS. /AUTHOR/
