Title: Testing and improving seed vigour in sugar beet.
Abstract: Seedling establishment of sugar beet is not only affected by temperature and soil structure, but also by seed vigour i.e. the capacity and the speed of emergence of the seedling in unfavourable conditions. To test differences between seed lots and to investigate the results of several methods of seed advancing, a fast and reliable seed vigour test in controlled environment conditions is needed. A comparative study showed that a pleated filter paper test for seed vigour estimation had a good correlation with seedling emergence in the field under cool conditions. In several experiments seed priming and advancing treatments resulted in improved emergence, but only under less favourable conditions and with slow emerging varieties. Addition of antagonists or plant supporting agents did not result in reproducible seed vigour improvement.
