Title: Design and Manufacture of a Blade-stiffened Composite Panel Made from a Stitched Preform
Abstract: The mechanical properties of thin fibre reinforced composites can be improved considerably with the use of through-the-thickness reinforcement. The technique of stitching and the Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) process, together, offer the benefit of very efficient structures with improved mechanical properties. Blade stiffened composite panels have been produced through this technique. The manufacturing process has been examined and design procedures studied. Finite Element Models have been used to predict the behaviour of stiffened panels. Experimental results for stitched and unstitched panels under shear load are presented and compared to model predictions.
