Abstract: The DOE's decision not to use $50 million allocated for a low-Btu coal gasification plant in favor of high-Btu gasifiers is indicative of the low market potential DOE projects for low-and medium-Btu gas. Caution is also becoming evident among equipment manufacturers, only two of whom now produce commercial equipment without government support. Industrial users who purchase the technology are motivated more by the need for secure energy supplies than by cost. Some equipment manufacturers argue that there is a potential market, although sales information does not support their optimism. The DOE budget cuts for low-Btu gas research will be re-evaluated later, but were necessary for this year's effort to balance the budget.
