Title: Studies on the Medicinal Compound L-Dopa in Mucuna pruriens Bak.
Abstract: Fifty Mucuna germplasm accessions were augmented through introduction, exchange and exploration activities of National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi. L-Dopa contents in Mucuna seeds were estimated as per cent/gram of dry seed on an UV Spectrophotometer at 280 nm. The L-Dopa contents varied significantly in different accessions and ranged between 1.51 to 6.29%. The minimum L-Dopa contents were recorded in accession number IC471873 and the maximum in IC385843. Out of 50 Mucuna accessions analyzed, L-Dopa contents varied significantly between 2–4.5% per gram of dry seeds in 45 accessions. Comparatively higher L-Dopa contents were recorded in the accessions IC385843, IC391885, IC83195, IC471875 and IC396648 with 6.3%, 5.8%, 5.2%, 4.9% and 4.6%, respectively. The present study validates the possible exploitation of five Mucuna germplasm for their pharmacological properties mainly the L-Dopa.
