Title: Changes in the Properties of Ribosomes and Transfer RNA Induced by Inhibitors of Protein Synthesis
Abstract: Since the discovery that chloramphenicol binds to ribosomes (Vazquez, D., 1964; Wolfe and Hahn, 1965) other inhibitors of protein synthesis also have been found to associate with ribosomes in vitro. These antibiotics can be classified according to their specificity towards the ribosomes (Vazquez, Staehelin, Celma, Battaner, Fernandez-Munoz and Monro, 1969). Two main classes exist, one affecting only the 70S ribosomes, the other interacting with both, 70S and 80S ribosomes. The substances which bind to the 70S ribosomes can be subdivided further into one group which specifically interacts with the 30S subunit and another group which binds to the 50S subunit. Likewise inhibitors affecting the 80S ribosomes can be classified depending on whether they associate with the 40S or with the 60S subunit.
