Title: Monitoring of road surface characteristics and performance evaluation of the pavements in Ontario
Abstract: This paper presents the current practices for pavement condition surveys and pavement performance evaluation used by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), with a focus on introducing the key indicators used in pavement surface characteristics evaluation and their applications in preservation management. The technical means used for pavement surface characteristics evaluation include 1) high-speed automated data collection of pavement roughness, rutting and surface friction information, and 2) the traditional practice of manual condition survey of pavement surface defects such as cracks, potholes and distortions. The standard procedures developed for assessing the Ontario provincial highway pavement conditions in terms of surface distress, roughness, rut and frictional resistance are discussed in details. Innovation in collecting pavement performance information is proposed for future consideration.
