Title: Products of vacuum desorption from a Cu/Zn-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ methanol catalyst after chemisorption of CO/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/
Abstract: CO/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/ were chemisorbed on a reduced Cu/Zn-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalyst; surface products were desorbed in vacuo and identified. CO/sub 2/, HCOOH, CH/sub 2/O, and CH/sub 3/OH were detected. It is assumed that during the methanol synthesis carbon is oxidized stepwise on the catalyst surface. The oxidation state of the carbon atoms varies from 4 (in CO/sub 2/), to 2 (in HCOOH), zero (in CH/sub 2/O), and -2 (in CH/sub 3/OH).
