Title: Sectoral Differences in HRM Practices of Coimbatore Industries
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to bring out the differences in the extent of usage and perceived effectiveness of HRM practices, between the service and manufacturing industries of Coimbatore, an important industrial city in South India. The study used a structured interview questionnaire to collect data on the prevailing HRM practices in the region. The HR managers of selected companies across the region were the respondents. Descriptive statistics and t-tests were used to find the differences in HRM practices between the two sectors. The findings show that the service and manufacturing industries differ in their recruitment and training practices. There is no significant difference between the two sectors in the perceived effectiveness of the HRM practices. As the respondents were busy, they were reluctant to give face-to-face interviews. Only 9 direct interviews were possible. So the researcher could not probe into the details of the practices. The study helps HR professionals to understand the impact of context on HRM and thereby helps them to design industry specific or context specific HRM practices. The study explored the sectoral differences in HRM practices in an important industrial city, thereby yielding important implications for the regional industries. It also presented a framework to understand the HRM function in its context.
