Title: Start Up Procedures to Achieve Sea Water Explusion for Tunnelled Ocean Outfalls

These outfalls are more prone to seawater intrusion problems than piped outfalls layed on or just below the seabed. Thorough research efforts, carried out in the last decade, using approximating analytical methods are available to determine the saline intrusion and purging-criteria. Due to the complexity of the hydraulics, the large capital and operating costs involved and the inaccessibility of the structures, a fail-safe design philosophy is offered, involving initial prototype testing. Adjustments at commissioning are of no major inconvenience, because the nozzles, effecting headloss control, can be blanked off or opened with submersibles that would be in use during this final stage of construction.Read More
