Title: Effect of nitrogen and farm yard manure on finger millet Eleusine coracana (L) Gaertn
Abstract: In field trials in 1965, '66 and '68, the early-maturing finger millet cv. AKP.2, Co.8, Co.10 and EC 4841 and the short duration cv. Co.2, Co.3, PLR.1 and Co.7 were supplied with 0, 22.5, 45.0, 67.5, 90.0, 112.5 or 135.0 kg N/ha, with or without 25 t f.y.m./ha. The early cultivars responded to increases in applied N up to 67.5 kg/ha at which rate there was a 21.4% yield increase over the control. The increase in yield remained constant at 90 kg N/ha, declined at 112.5 kg/ha then showed a further increase at 130 kg/ha. Regression analysis indicated that the trend of response was linear. Co.10 and EC 4841 outyielded the standard Co.8 by 35.3 and 50.4%, respectively, while Co.3, PLR.1 and Co.7 outyielded Co.2 by 15.5, 18.8 and 23.7%, respectively. F.y.m. increased the grain yields of early and short duration cultivars by 9.5 and 3.5%, respectively. Short duration cultivars responded to increases in applied N up to 112.5 kg N/ha at which rate there was a 24.1% increase in yield over the untreated control.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:The early varieties AKP2, CO8, CO10 and EC4841, and CO2, CO3, PLR1 and CO7, of short duration, were tested under six levels of nitrogen, ranging from 22.5 to 135.0 kg/ha, and under two levels of manure, 0 and 25 tonnes/ha. The yield of the early varieties increased up to 67.5 kg nitrogen/ha and then declined. CO10 and EC4841 gave a 35 and 50% higher yield, respectively, than the standard CO8. Application of manure at 25 tonnes/ha resulted in a 9.1% increase in yield of the early varieties. The short-duration varieties gave increased yields up to a level of 112.5 kg nitrogen/ha but showed little response to manure. CO7 gave a 23.7% higher yield than the standard CO2
