Title: Disadvantages to Turkey’s EU Accession: Turkish Perspective
Abstract: This paper argues that Turkey is in a position where it would be more beneficial to remain a separate entity from the EU.While EU accession would not severely damage Turkey's economy, entrance is no longer necessary given its present state and the state of the EU.Refraining from membership is more advantageous for Turkey's foreign policy makers because remaining an individual actor would allot Turkey more political freedom within its borders.Turkey's administration would be able to pursue its own strategic interests more easily if it is not tethered to EU objectives.Turkey would be at a strategic advantage in the coming years if it chooses to balance between the Middle East and United States rather than dedicate the majority of efforts towards the EU.Independent from the EU, Turkey can decide its policies in relations with the EU, US, or Middle East depending on its own international ambitions.
