Title: PREBASIC PROTEIN OF MYELIN ISOLATED FROM HUMAN BRAIN
Abstract: This chapter discusses the prebasic protein of myelin isolated from human brain. Although some heterogeneity of basic protein may arise as an artifact during the isolation of myelin, the prebasic protein is now recognized as an intrinsic component of central myelin in these species. During a systematic study of the protein pattern of myelin isolated from human brain basic protein was found to be closely preceded by a small protein band on electrophoresis in most cases. Unfrozen white matter showed little changes in its protein pattern when incubated at room temperature for up to 48 h. Studies are in progress to isolate the prebasic protein of human myelin by preparative gel electrophoresis and to further characterize it.
