Title: [Structural and histochemical characteristics of the endometrium in women using different types of intrauterine contraceptives].
Abstract: Observations were conducted on 77 healthy women (20-48 years old) using different types of intrauterine contraceptives (T-Cu-200 and Lippes loop) for periods lasting from 6 months to 9 years. To study the influence of the contraceptives on the uterine histological studies were done on the endometrium either immediately after withdrawal of the contraceptives or 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 months later. The majority of observed women had normal morphological and functional characteristics of the endometrium in accordance with the days of the menstrual cycle. The minority of the women had their endometrium in a delayed state of ripeness. It was found that the histological state of the endometrium returned to normal after withdrawal of the contraceptives. Swelling blood infiltration thrombosis of small vessels and partly necrotised tissues were discovered where the endometrium and the contraceptives made contact. Inflammation infiltrate contained limphoid tissues and leucocytes but these changes were reversible also. It was concluded that the response of the uterine to the contraceptives was the biological response to the foreign body. The opinion was expressed that the leucocytes (and the products of their destruction) in the endometrium had cytotoxic and embriotoxic effects. The compared types of contraceptives did not differ in their influence on the endometrium of the observed women. (Summary in ENG)
