Title: LEVERAGING MICRO CREDIT TO ENHANCE SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT: A STUDY OF THE IMPACT OF INVESTING IN INCOME GENERATING ASSETS
Abstract: Micro credit as a tool in fostering economic and social empowerment among women has been a subject of research over the years. But, most prior studies have focused on validating that micro credit programs empower women and fail to measure improvement in social status, household welfare and economic status. Through a survey of 1250 self-help group borrowers in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, an attempt is made to establish that investing micro credit in income generating assets socially empowers women and provision of training further enhances the magnitude of the outcome and this has been empirically demonstrated. The study is of significance of policy makers, banks and microfinance institutions in leveraging benefits out of micro credit lending.
