Title: Computer Systems for Whole-Chain Traceability in Beef Production Systems
Abstract: Whole-chain traceability systems can help increase food safety, improve supply chain management, and add value to consumer products. Significant obstacles to implementing traceability, however, including costs of implementation and operation, loss of confidentiality in business transactions, and increased liability, have inhibited participation in whole-chain traceability systems, severely limiting the value of traceability for improving food safety and animal disease traceability. However, technology is available to help address these concerns and increase participation. An application of this technology to beef production systems is described.
