Title: Seeing Double : Korean Adoptees and Dual Citizenship
Abstract: In April 2010, the South Korean National Assembly passed a revision to the Nationality Act that permits dual citizenship for certain groups, including Korean adoptees. This paper presents preliminary results from an online survey about adoptee attitudes toward dual citizenship and explores the material and symbolic significance of dual citizenship for adoptees. Dual citizenship at once recognizes the dual origins and heritages of adoptees, but it also presents new challenges for adoptees whose personal histories and everyday lives exceed the legal and social categories of nationality and belonging that govern contemporary life.
