Abstract: Individual requirements statements contain information about essential characteristics or attributes a system or system element must possess. This chapter covers linking requirements up to the source from which they sprang, a rationale for their identification, and requirements for other elements with which they are related. This is called vertical or parent-child traceability. In addition, we may also be interested in longitudinal traceability that establishes linkage among a requirement, its design features, and verification information. The third kind of traceability of value is traceability to the modeling source from which the requirement was derived, or lateral traceability. Traceability information is seldom included in a specification, but it is very useful during the development and modification processes to have access to this information. This information can be developed after the fact, but it is more difficult to accomplish than it is during the time the requirements are being defined.
