Abstract: Vitamin D is 1–25 dihydroxy cholecalciferol or calcitriol, is an active form of vitamin D3. It is lipid soluble vitamin. Vitamin D plays a major role in maintaining the oral health, mineral metabolism, formation bone, innate immunity, calcium cycle. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism which is highly associated with periodontal disease. A hypothesis is that vitamin D is not only useful with direct effects like maintaining the oral health, bone metabolism it has got high capacity to function as anti inflammatory effects and stimulate the production of anti – microbial peptides. The aim of this article is to review the impact of vitamin D in periodontal health and disease.
