Abstract: In order to investigate the hemodynamic cause of diseases in the cardiovascular system due to the stenosis, a lot of experimental or numerical stuidies on flow characteristics of the blood vessel with a stenosis have been carried out. However, most of these studies assumed that the blood vessel aroud the stenosis is rigid. In this study, the pulsatile blood flow through the elastic blood vessel with a stenosis is numerically simulated. The elastic wall is modeld as a thin membrane and the usual Newtonian model of blood viscosity is used to estimate the wall shear stress. A numerical algorithm based on the ALE finite element method is developed to simulate the pulsatile blood flow through the elastic blood vessel with stenosis. And the flow characteristics are compared with those of the rigid blood vessel model. Especially, the distensibility of the wall leads to less WSS distribution on the stenosis up to 14% but more recirculation region in front of stenosis.
