Title: How Gross is Pollution?: Its Occurrence and Measurement in Stormwater Channels within Australian Cities
Abstract: The presence of gross pollutants within urban stormwater channels has hydraulic, aesthetic and environmental consequences. To date, the majority of studies on the effects of gross pollutants (organic and man-made litter/debris from catchments) have concentrated on its role in flow impedance and its removal from channels. This paper highlights the lack of data on gross pollutants and outlines two monitoring programmes which are attempting to redress this lack of data. Study areas in Sydney and Melbourne are described and example pollutographs of concentrations and loads are presented from one catchment in Sydney. The methodology for a nested catchment study in Melbourne is outlined which will investigate pollutant loads, relate loads to catchment characteristics and management practices and investigate remediation technologies.
