Title: Ecological Risk Assessment for Urban Water Sources
Abstract: To protect water sources, this study proposes a framework of ecological risk assessment(ERA) based on the Guidelines of Ecological Risk Assessment of the US EPA.The main procedures of the ERA include: confirming risk assessment range, endpoint and receptor assessment, risk source assessment, hazard assessment, exposure assessment, and synthesis risk assessment. The proposed method was applied to assess the ecological risk of Hongfeng Lake, which is the main water source of Guiyang City. The Lake is divided into three(regions-)north lake, south lake and centre lake, and the water quality is defined as an assessment endpoint. The major ecological risk sources are analyzed, such as point pollution,non-point pollution, sediment pollution, acid rain, drought, karst desertification, and so on.Integrating hazard assessment and exposure assessment and applying the measure of weighting factors, the ecological risk of Hongfeng Lake was characterized. The results show that the risk values are 0.6324 in the south lake,0.3449 in the north lake, and 0.3335 in the centre lake. The key ecological risk sources are TP in the water with weight coefficient 0.2059,and metals in the sediment with weight coefficient 0.1751.The framework of the ERA applied in this study is a key tool to analyze the ecological risks and therefore to protect the water source.
