Title: Deterioration and maintenance of local roads
Abstract: In collaboration with 236 road agencies, ARRB has developed the first national Australian local road deterioration models. The models were derived from analysing the findings of a long term monitoring program covering 500 sealed and 100 unsealed local road sites in various traffic and climatic environments across Australia. For the first time, asset managers have access to a range of evidence based deterioration models to assist in making decisions about maintenance programs for local roads. Models were also developed for each State, and results provided to each participating road agency. Studies of unsealed roads have also been widened, e.g. in Moorabool Shire and Gannawarra Shire Council in Victoria, to investigate the performance of different surface materials and the effects of maintenance. This paper describes the basis for the models and some experience in their use in different parts of Australia. It also notes the importance of local adaptation and the benefits to road agencies and managers of applying the models in their asset management systems and provides a progress report on ongoing studies to further improve the unsealed road models.
