Abstract: Abstract Empirical relations describing the attenuation of the maximum trace amplitudes recorded by the Wood-Anderson horizontal seismometer in the area of Greece are determined. Based on these relations, a new procedure for calculating accurate local magnitudes for earthquakes in Greece is introduced. Furthermore, the consistency of the currently calculated surface-wave magnitudes by a formula proposed by Papazachos and Vasilicou (1966) is assured, and relations between M L , m b and M S scales are suggested. The relation between M L and m b as well as between M S and m b consis of two linear segments intersecting at the points (3.7, 4.3) and (4.3, 4.3), respectively, while the M S values are by 0.5 higher than M L .
