Title: International Production Networks and the Geography of Knowledge Spillovers
Abstract: Using industry-level R&D and patent data for a sample of 29 countries for the period 20002008, this paper studies the importance of production networks for technology spillovers. We estimate the effect of research externalities in generating innovation across countries in a model where the patterns of international production sharing determine knowledge diffusion. We show that the channel through which research externalities materialize is better captured by the degree of vertical integration between two countries than merely by their geographical distance.
