Title: The Archaeology of "Ferry Money": An Archaeological Approach to Numismatics and Monetary History of 14th-18th Century Japan
Abstract: Among the various sub-disciplines in contemporary archaeology, historical archaeology is one of the most exciting fields in both North America and Japan. There exists, however, a striking contrast between these two academic traditions in terms of their development and resulting research foci. This paper presents an archaeological and numismatic analysis of coins associated with burials from historic sites in Japan and attempts to reconstruct the dynamics of money circulation during the early Edo period (primarily the 17th century). Through a comparison of this case study to historical archaeology in North America, the question “What are the essentials for historical archaeology?” is addressed.
