Title: Caddoan Settlements in the Arkansas Ozarks: the Upper Lee Creek Valley
Abstract: The reexamination of collections made in 1934 plus additional field reconnaissance in 1979 revealed evidence of Caddoan occupation of the upper Lee Creek basin in Crawford County, Arkansas. The Caddoan inhabitants practiced a mixed economy of horticulture, hunting, and gathering. They made use of the diverse topographic features within the basin, including rock shelters. These Caddoan farmers were probably tied into the greater Caddo interaction sphere centered at the Spiro site in Oklahoma through secondary ceremonial centers at the Parris Mound and Cavanaugh Mound. Based on the Lee Creek data, it was concluded that the designation in the literature of an Ozark bluff dweller culture is a misnomer for the southern Arkansas Ozarks.
