Abstract: Abstract Surveyors, Geodesists and Photogrammetrists are all concerned with errors of centring. At the moment there appears to be a serious need to define what is so glibly referred to in the literature as the centring error. When discussing photogrammetric or planimetric accuracy, most people assume the concept of radial displacements but usually quote standard deviations referring to co-ordinate axis displacements. It would appear that different texts assume different meanings for the term with the result that incorrect formulae are commonly being used. The purpose of this article is to define generally the term radial centring error, and derive the associated frequency distributions.
