Abstract: This paper describes how a plate-bearing test is carried out in the field to estimate the stiffness (K value) of the ground. Recent developments of portable falling weight deflectometer (FWD) equipment under dynamic loading conditions have now made it possible easily to obtain a direct measurement of K value (KPFWD) during construction. One of the key aspects associated with K values is the contact pressure between a loading plate and the surface of the ground. This paper presents the various kinds of contact pressure distribution in portable FWD and plate bearing test for the subgrade made up with clay, sand or gravel. The intensity of stresses at the edges of a rigid loading plate was measured for these soils.
