Title: AVAILABILITY OF OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY
Abstract: It seems rather audacious for Dr. Dominick Zero and colleagues to state in their September JADA supplement article, “The Biology, Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Dental Caries: Scientific Advances in the United States” (Zero DT, Fontana M, Martinez-Mier EA, Ferreira-Zandona A, Ando M, Gonzalez-Cabezas C, Bayne S. JADA 2009;140[suppl 1]:25S–34S), that optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been used in dentistry for over a decade. True, it has been reported in the dental literature for nearly that long, but October seems to be unavailable commercially for general practitioners like me. A recent estimate suggests we won't see it until 2011. 1 Dental Product Reports Dentistry's new magic wand. AVAILABILITY OF OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY: Author's responseThe Journal of the American Dental AssociationVol. 141Issue 1PreviewI agree that the wording may be misleading, depending on how the “used in dentistry for over a decade” is interpreted. The intended meaning was that optical coherence tomography has been used in dental applications for nearly a decade. Dr. Wiggin is correct that this method has been used only in dental research settings thus far. I really have no first-hand knowledge regarding why this technology is being held up. Full-Text PDF
