Title: Short‐term growth effects of whole‐tree harvest in early thinnings of birch (<i>Betula</i> spp) and <i>Picea abies</i>
Abstract: Abstract An experiment was conducted in southern and central parts of Sweden in order to evaluate consequences of intensive biomass harvest in early thinnings of mixed stands of birch (Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). The trial was started by releasing 20 to 30‐year‐old spruce from overstorey birch, whereupon the felled birches were removed as whole trees or left in the stand. After five years the plots were revisited and growth of the residual stand was calculated. No significant effects of the whole‐tree harvest could be found, and it was concluded that in a short‐term the intensive removal of biomass does not adversely affect growth of the residual stand. However, the observation period needs to be extended in order to obtain more reliable results. Key words: Betula péndulaBetula pubescensbiomass removalPicea abiesthinningwhole‐tree harvest
