Title: Number Two Home: A Story of Japanese Pioneers in Australia by Noreen Jones(book review)
Abstract: In Number 2 Home Noreen Jones has provided a valuable record of the history of Japanese migration to Australia in the late nineteenth century. A mixture of archival research and personal histories, the book focuses primarily on the generation of Japanese migrants who settled in Western Australia prior to the introduction of what is commonly known as the White Australia legislation of 1901. Though the details are patchy in some parts of the narrative (something that the author is aware of), and although at times the prose is less than riveting, Number 2 Home makes a modest but important contribution to the history of the relationship between Japan and Australia.
