For a long time, studies suggested that something fundamental was at work at the regional level that might account for differences in innovation and growth rates across regions. However, studies since the early 1990s have begun to more systematically examine the factors and key institutions involved in this process. The result is the ability to disentangle the regional-level puzzle more precisely. This edited book offers a timely contribution to such efforts by investigating contemporary regional economic growth through three central concepts: agglomeration, clustering, and entrepreneurship. The volume is organized around the evolving centrality of these concepts in understanding and designing policies for regional economic development. Models are built and cases are explored according to increasingly acknowledged evidence and theoretical insights that knowledge creation and diffusion (that are structured by networks of individuals and firms with local and non-local linkages) are at the center of innovation and regional growth. While agglomeration and clustering serve as a framework for the analysis of such relations and interactions, entrepreneurship is seen as one of the main institutions of regional economic development.Read More
