Abstract: Providing high-quality, cost-effective medical care is essential in meeting the health system demands of a rapidly expanding and ageing population. It is necessary to critically evaluate not only medical treatments and techniques but also the process by which medicine is delivered to the health care consumer. Defining quality, measuring performance, and changing ineffective practices must become routine activities in medical care. Continuous Quality Improvement, also referred to as Total Quality Management, or Performance Improvement is a highly effective team-based approach used in evaluating and instituting system-wide changes. Geriatricians are comfortable with the interdisciplinary team process and thus are in a unique position to take a lead in the healthcare quality improvement process. Using evidence-based quality improvement initiatives, meaningful clinical outcomes have been demonstrated for elderly populations across a multitude of care settings and across the world.
