Title: Rethinking the "Nontraditional" Student from a Historical Perspective: State Normal Schools in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries
Abstract: Using the current literature as a framework, this article profiles earlier "nontraditional" students who attended state normal schools. The article also discusses how the normal schools met their needs. Although the normal schools' specific approaches were more appropriate for their time than the present, these institutions served atypical students very effectively.
