Abstract: The benefits of lowering cholesterol levels have been well established in large clinical trials both in the secondary and the primary settings. In multiple studies, total plasma homocysteine has been shown to be increased in subjects with coronary artery disease and is considered as an emerging risk factor. B-group vitamins decrease plasma homocysteine levels. Other pharmacological agents are also known to alter the concentration of plasma homocysteine. Among them, lipid-lowering drugs have been shown to modify homocysteine levels. An increasing effect on homocysteine concentrations may counteract the favorable effect on cholesterol levels.
